KFC and their low key way of winning on twitter
Many social media posts from a company have a hard time connecting. Perhaps it feels at time like they are trying to hard to reach a particular demographic, or some that I have seen ever try to use language that might be foreign to the tone of the brand.
Some companies take another more subtle approach, KFC created a campaign earlier this year and then didn't tell anyone about it. The people that they were following on Twitter was a nod to original recipe that the restaurant uses to create its chicken. They were following 5 spice girls and 6 people named herb, for a total, you guessed it of 11 herbs and spices.
KFC placed this silently awesome campaign on their twitter account a month before someone noticed it and didn't even know if someone would find it. The tweet by the user that found it was interacted with over a million times.
I think this tweet makes the fans of the brand even more likely to talk about KFC with an awesome low key social campaign. However the target market for the reaction was anyone on the internet into memes and cool things of this nature, I would guess a younger demographic was in the sights for this one. I think it was super effective because it didn't cost them anything other than some time to come up with the changes to the twitter account and the reaction to it went viral. It made it look effortless to create buzz. The buzz being around the recipe could cause people to remember that they haven't had KFC in a while and get them craving the 11 herbs and spices.
At the end of the day this campaign does make me more likely to buy the product, it raises the clout of KFC in the internet savvy world of today, and reminds me that I do like the way it tastes with the 11 herbs and spices.
The reaction tweet below that discovered the hidden gem.
