4.3 Lincoln Park Zoo
The Lincoln Park
Zoo is a not for profit organization that is celebrating their 150th
anniversary. The zoo is free to the
public and is in the heart of Chicago. In addition, to providing care for a
variety of animals, they also have educational programs for all ages as well as
a host of public/private events throughout the year. Although the zoo receives funding from the
Chicago Park District more than two-thirds is generated from sales at the zoo
through their restaurants, gift shops, parking and private events. The zoo utilizes this money to update/renovate
many of the animal’s habitats and to provide educational resources to the
community in order to raise awareness of the importance in caring for animal
wildlife. The Lincoln Park Zoo uses many
forms of social media for marketing including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and
SnapChat.
The Lincoln Park
Zoo’s campaigns have included many activities that are well suited for families
and couples. One particular event was
Zoolights, which was advertised on the radio, Facebook events and Twitter. The marketing was so popular, that the
parking lots constantly were full for the week and even though the weather was
quite chilly there were crowds and crowds of people flocking to the event each
night. Another event that the Zoo hosts,
is a Family Campout for Zoo members. For
these private events the Zoo boosts its’ marketing by advertising to consumers
to sign up to become a member in order to receive priority in registering for
the event. Because of this, their
membership levels go up and the event sells out each year. On the zoo’s Facebook page, you’re able to
check events that are happening each week/month. In addition, to videos, which feature a story
about one of the Zoo’s animals or currently, a video celebrating the zoo’s 150th
anniversary. Lastly, their Instagram account features photographs of families
and individuals enjoying their day at the zoo.
I feel the zoo’s marketing is very effective in getting their message out
there and providing a space where visitors can share their favorite memory at
the zoo.
