End Polio Now Campaign by Rotary Internationa
Since 1985, Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio worldwide. While the Salk vaccine virtually eliminted polio in the United States, other countries have not been so lucky. It took nearly thirty three years to eradicate the virus from all except three countries--Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Even India was declared polio-free in 2016. The cost to continue the battle and to keep the third-world countries polio free costs billions of dollars, over and above the funding Rotarians with the help of the Bill Gates Foundation and the World Health Organization have already raised.
For the last stretch of this war, Rotary International has engaged social media through facebook pages and Linked In contacts. Each individual Rotary Club as well as each Rotary District and Rotary International post to Facebook several times each day to make the world aware of its ongoing struggle. For a while, billboards at airports (such as O'Hare and Los Angeles) carried the mantra, "we are this close. . ." with the thumb and forefinger of the celebrity indicating the small amount ( relatively speaking) of polio that remains in the world. Celebrity spokespersons such as Itzak Perlman (himself a survivor) and Archbiship TuTu have carried the "this close" message to countries where their status is very important.
Rotary Internation has hired a marketing firm and professional marketers to get their word out. Given the massive task they undertook over 30 years ago, we must agree that they have been successful. They have been diligent and determined to keep their promise to the children of the world to eradicate polio within their lifetimes.
